Steel Roll Top Fencing Sydney – Schools, Parks & Commercial Mesh Fencing

Roll top fencing is a welded steel mesh panel – 50 × 150 mm rectangles in 4 or 5 mm wire – with the top and bottom edges rolled into a smooth loop. The roll removes every sharp wire end, stiffens the panel and gives the fence its recognisable profile. It is see-through, so supervisors can see across a playground or oval, and it is difficult to climb, cut or vandalise.

Where roll top is specified

Schools and childcare – 1.8 m or 2.1 m boundary fencing, internal play-area fencing at 1.2 m, self-closing pedestrian gates and lockable vehicle gates.
Sports fields and courts – 1.2 m to 2.1 m perimeters, dugouts and player enclosures; taller chain-wire or mesh ball-stops behind goals.
Parks, reserves and playgrounds – dog parks, playground surrounds, creek and pond edges where visibility matters.
Aquatic centres and shared pools – 1.2 m or 1.8 m barriers to AS 1926.1 with compliant gates and latches.

Gates and hardware

Gates are built from the same mesh in a 40 × 40 mm or 50 × 50 mm RHS frame. Pedestrian gates take self-closing hinges and a keyed or magnetic latch (child-safe latches where required); double gates use a drop bolt and padlock provision or an electric strike; sliding gates run on a track or cantilever and can be motorised with access control. Panic-exit hardware is available for school and public egress gates.

What is roll top fencing?

Welded steel mesh panels whose top (and usually bottom) edge is rolled over into a smooth loop instead of finishing in cut wire ends. The roll removes sharp points, adds rigidity, and gives the fence its distinctive look. Standard mesh is 50 × 150 mm rectangles in 4 mm or 5 mm galvanised, powder-coated wire.

Where is roll top used?

Schools, childcare centres, sports fields, parks and playgrounds, aquatic centres, council reserves, retirement villages and industrial sites – anywhere a safe, see-through, vandal-resistant boundary is needed. It is often specified in council and Department of Education standard details.

Is roll top fencing safe for children?

That is its purpose. The rolled edges have no sharp points, the 50 × 150 mm mesh is too small for footholds when installed vertically, and heights of 1.8 m or 2.1 m stop climbing. It is also used as a pool barrier in aquatic centres when built to AS 1926.1.

Roll top or security panel (spear top)?

Spear-top security panels deter intruders with pointed pickets and suit commercial and industrial perimeters. Roll top has no points, so it is the choice around children and the public. Both are 2.1 m steel, powder-coated black or any colour, and both take matching swing and sliding gates.

What heights and colours?

900 mm, 1.2 m, 1.5 m, 1.8 m and 2.1 m panels, 2.4 m or 3.0 m long. Black is standard; any powder-coat colour is available, with green, grey and Colorbond-matched shades common on schools and parks.

Do you do commercial jobs?

Yes – our security fencing work includes the perimeter fence at Parramatta High School: 2.4 m × 2.1 m steel panels on 65 × 65 mm or larger posts (see our security fencing page). We quote from plans or a site walk, work to council and Department specifications, and can supply panels only for other contractors.
