Aluminium flat top fencing
The clean, modern tubular fence for pools, gardens and front boundaries. Rust-free aluminium, 70 mm picket gaps, 26 colours – supplied as complete kits Australia-wide or installed across Sydney.
Flat top fencing is a welded panel of vertical tubular pickets between two rails, with a flush top edge. It gives a clear view through the fence, has no footholds a child can climb, and needs no maintenance beyond a hose down – which is why it is the standard choice for pool barriers and the most popular front and garden fence we sell.
We supply flat top fencing in powder-coated aluminium (and steel on request) as 2.4 m × 1.2 m panels, with 50 × 50 mm posts, colour-matched brackets, caps and screws, and matching 970 mm pool-safe gates with self-closing hinges and a compliant latch. Kits are sold by the panel or as complete 3- to 10-panel pool fence kits, and we install across Sydney.

Counting a fence
- Measure each straight run in metres and subtract gate openings (about 1 m per single gate).
- Divide by 2.4 and round up – that is the number of panels for that run.
- Posts = panels + 1 per run, plus 2 per gate. Brackets = 4 per panel. Caps = 1 per post.
- Corners use one shared post; slopes may need a panel cut or a stepped post.

Aluminium vs steel
Aluminium will not rust, weighs about 7 kg a panel, and is the right material anywhere near water or salt – pools, coastal suburbs, sprinklers. Cut ends do not need sealing. Steel is stronger and stiffer, suits long front boundaries and security applications, and costs a little less per panel, but cut ends must be sealed and it will eventually corrode where the coating is damaged.
Colours and finish
Panels and posts are powder-coated. Black, White, Primrose (Domain) and Mill Finish (natural silver) are stocked; the full range of 26 colours – including Colorbond-matched shades such as Monument, Woodland Grey and Surfmist – is made to order in about one to two weeks. Frame and pickets are one colour.
Where flat top works best
- Pool barriers – the standard design; 1.2 m high, 70 mm gaps, matching self-closing gate.
- Garden and boundary fences – keeps pets and children in without blocking the view; pairs well with hedges.
- Front fences – open designs are often required by councils where solid front fences are not allowed; 1.2 m or 1.5 m high.
- Balustrade-style screens for decks and retaining walls (check balustrade requirements for falls over 1 m – a different standard applies).
Flat top fencing as a pool barrier in NSW
Flat top panels are designed around the NSW rules, but the barrier as a whole is what gets certified. From the NSW Government's current guidance:
- Minimum 1.2 m high measured from the finished ground on the outside; a boundary fence used as part of the barrier must be 1.8 m.
- Gaps no more than 100 mm under the fence or between uprights (our pickets are at 70 mm).
- A 900 mm non-climbable zone outside the fence (arc from the top rail) and 300 mm inside – no pot plants, furniture, barbecues or shrubs.
- Gate opens outward, self-closes and self-latches from any position; latch release at least 1500 mm high or shielded.
- Doors and windows from the house can no longer form part of the barrier.

How it is installed
- Set out the line and mark post centres at 2.45 m, allowing for gates and corners.
- Posts – dig 450–600 mm and concrete in, or bolt flanged posts to a sound slab or coping with masonry anchors. Keep posts plumb and to a string line.
- Panels – fix brackets to the posts, sit the panel rails in the brackets and screw off. Leave the bottom gap under 100 mm for pool barriers.
- Gate – hang on self-closing hinges, fit the latch, adjust tension so it closes and latches from a few centimetres open, half open and fully open.
- Finish – caps on, touch up cut ends, clear the non-climbable zone, and book the inspection if it is a pool.

Flat top fencing questions
What is flat top fencing?
Vertical tubular uprights (pickets) welded between two horizontal rails, with the top rail finishing flush with the pickets – no spears or loops. It is the cleanest, most common style for pool and garden fencing and is available in aluminium or steel.
Aluminium or steel flat top?
Aluminium does not rust, is light to handle and is the right choice around pools and on the coast. Steel is heavier and stronger and suits front boundaries and security fences. Both are powder-coated and both are available in the same designs.
Is flat top fencing pool compliant?
Our 1.2 m flat top panels have 70 mm gaps and no horizontal footholds between the rails, which suits NSW pool barrier requirements – but compliance depends on the finished barrier: height from the outside ground, a gap under the fence of no more than 100 mm, the 900 mm non-climbable zone, and a self-closing, self-latching outward-opening gate. How far apart are the posts?
Panels are 2.4 m long, so posts are set at about 2.45 m centres. Panels can be cut down for short bays; on slopes the brackets allow the panel to rake slightly or the fence is stepped.
Can I install it myself?
Yes – flat top fencing is the most DIY-friendly fence we sell. Panels, posts, brackets, caps and screws come as a kit with instructions. Posts are set 450–600 mm into concrete, or flanged posts are bolted to an existing slab. If it is a pool barrier, have it inspected when finished.
What colours are stocked?
Black, White, Primrose (Domain) and Mill Finish (silver) are stocked. Any powder-coat colour can be ordered, usually in one to two weeks.
