Pool gates
The gate is where most pool barriers fail inspection. Ours are aluminium, hung on self-closing hinges with a compliant latch, and matched to your pool fence panels.
Our standard pool gate is a 970 mm wide × 1.2 m high powder-coated aluminium flat top gate door, fitted with an adjustable self-closing hinge set and a pool-rated latch. It matches our flat top aluminium pool fence panels; other tubular designs (rod top, loop, spear) can be made to match too.
In NSW a pool gate must open outward, away from the pool, and must self-close and self-latch from any open position without being pushed. The latch release must be positioned so a young child cannot reach it – typically at least 1500 mm above ground, or shielded. We install to these requirements and adjust the closer so the gate latches every time.
A compliant gate does not make a compliant pool. Height, gaps, the non-climbable zone and anything a child could climb near the barrier all matter. Read our NSW pool fencing information centre and have the finished barrier inspected.

Colorbond as part of a pool barrier
Many Sydney pools use the Colorbond boundary fence as one side of the barrier. That is allowed, but the boundary fence must then meet the barrier height and the non-climbable zone requirements on the pool side – and any gate in it must meet the gate rules. We build Colorbond fences and sheet extensions for exactly this situation.

Common questions
Which way must a pool gate open?
Outward, away from the pool area, so a child pushing on it from outside cannot open it.
Does the gate have to be self-closing?
Yes. From any open position the gate must swing closed and latch by itself. We fit adjustable self-closing hinges and set the tension on site.
Can I use a normal D-latch on a pool gate?
No. Pool gates need a latch that a young child cannot operate – normally a magnetic pool latch with the release at least 1500 mm from the ground, or otherwise shielded as the standard allows.
Will the gate make my pool compliant?
Only as part of a compliant barrier. Height, gaps, non-climbable zones and surrounding objects all have to meet the requirements. We recommend an inspection by your council or an accredited certifier once the barrier is finished.
