Vertical slat fencing uses the same 65 × 16 mm powder-coated aluminium slat as our horizontal slat system, turned upright and fixed top and bottom to concealed rails. The result is a taller-looking, more architectural fence that hides the posts on short runs, sheds dust and rain instead of collecting it, and is much harder to climb than horizontal slats.

Set the gap to suit the job: 10 mm for a near-solid privacy screen, 20–30 mm for the typical front fence, 50–70 mm for an open picket look that meets pool barrier spacing. The photos below show a white vertical slat picket panel we installed in Sydney and our slat gates, which use the same slat and colour range.

Vertical slats as privacy screens

On tight Sydney blocks the most common request is privacy from a neighbour's window or deck without building a solid wall. A 1.8 m or 2.1 m vertical slat screen with a 10–20 mm gap does exactly that while letting air through, and because it is aluminium it can sit on top of a low brick wall or retaining wall with flanged posts. Screens can also be fixed to existing Colorbond posts as a slat fence extension.

Gates

Vertical slat gates are built as a welded frame with the slats fixed inside it, so the gap pattern matches the fence exactly. Pedestrian gates take a magnetic or key-lockable latch; double gates use a drop bolt and can be motorised with swing-arm openers; sliding gates run on a track or cantilever with a heavier frame. Installation

Posts at 2.4 m centres (2.0 m for 2.1 m-high privacy screens), concreted 600 mm or flanged to masonry.
Bottom rail fixed level, slats clipped or screwed at the chosen gap, top rail closes the panel – no visible fixings from the street side.
Slopes are stepped so slats stay vertical; panels can be cut to width.
Most front fences and screens are finished in one day.

Common questions

Vertical slat or horizontal slat?

Horizontal slats read as wide and low and suit long modern facades; vertical slats make a fence look taller and narrower, hide the post line better on short runs, and shed water and dust rather than collecting it on the top of each slat. Vertical slats are also harder to climb. Both use the same 65 × 16 mm aluminium slat and the same colours – it is a design choice.

How much privacy do vertical slats give?

That depends on the gap. A 65 mm slat with a 10 mm gap is around 85% screened and blocks the view from the footpath; a 20–30 mm gap lets more light and air through and is what most front fences use; a 50–70 mm gap is an open, pool-compliant picket look. We can mock up the spacing on site.

Can I have a vertical slat gate to match?

Yes. Pedestrian, double swing and sliding gates are built on the same slat and gap so the pattern runs continuously. Gate frames are 50 × 50 mm or 65 × 65 mm depending on width; automation is available.

Are the slats aluminium or steel?

Aluminium. It is light, will not rust, and takes a factory powder coat in any colour, including timber-look woodgrain finishes. Steel slats are available on request for high-security applications.

What about wind loading on a solid-looking fence?

Close-gapped slat fencing catches more wind than open fencing, so posts are set deeper (600 mm) and spaced at 2.4 m or less, and we upsize to 65 mm posts on exposed sites or fences over 1.8 m.
