Single paling

Palings butted side by side on three rails. The economical boundary fence.

Lapped

Overlapping palings with no gaps – full privacy without the capping.

Lap & cap

Overlapping palings finished with a capping rail. The premium timber fence.

Why we build only in treated pine

Treated pine is stable, termite and rot resistant, readily available and takes paint or stain well. It lets us build a straight, long-lasting timber fence at a price that competes with Colorbond. We do not offer hardwood fencing.

Steel posts as standard

The weak point of a timber fence is the post at ground level. We set galvanised steel posts (65 × 65 mm) in concrete and fix the rails with Z-brackets and tek screws; palings are nailed to three rails for 1.8 m fences. Timber posts (150 × 50 mm) are available on request.

Heights

1.5 m, 1.8 m (standard), 2.1 m and 2.4 m. Fences over 1.8 m normally need council approval.

Timber fencing questions

Do you build hardwood fences?

No. We build new timber fencing in treated pine only – it is stable, resists rot and termites, and keeps the cost sensible. Hardwood paling fences can cost two to three times as much.

Timber posts or steel posts?

Steel. Galvanised 65 × 65 mm steel posts last far longer in the ground than timber posts and are our recommendation for every new timber fence. Timber 150 × 50 mm posts are available if you prefer the traditional look.

How many palings per metre?

About 5 per metre for a single paling fence (150 mm palings with 50 mm gaps). A lapped fence adds a 100 mm paling over each gap, so about 10 palings per metre in total.

Is timber cheaper than Colorbond?

Usually not – a timber fence we build is generally around 20% more than the equivalent Colorbond fence because it takes more labour, and Colorbond lasts longer with no maintenance. Timber wins on looks in the right setting and on gardens where you want to grow against it.

Can I paint or stain it?

Yes, after it has dried out for a few weeks. We also offer fence painting.
